2014 Summer Jazz Concert Series Hits the Road!

The Northwest Arkansas Jazz Society (NAJS) kicked off the 16th season of the Summer Jazz Concert Series with the Grammy Award winning band,The Yellowjackets. in Eureka Springs at the Auditorium. The Jackets brought the fans to their feet over the course of two enrrgy packed sets. What a great way to open the season.

Two more concerts are still to come, one in Bentonville, and the final event of the season in Fayetteville.“We’re producing concerts in three cities this summer,” said Robert Ginsburg, NAJS Executive Director. “…and are excited to bring great jazz to more people in Northwest Arkansas.

THE SONS OF BRASIL will be returning to NWA on Sunday,July 20 at 3:00 PM to perform at 21C Hotel in Bentonville. The Sons of Brasil have performed every week since their inception in 1991 playing Brazilian Jazz, Samba and Bossa Nova.

The Kansas City natives include Stan Kessler who was voted “outstanding overall musician,” by JAM magazine and is also the founder of The Sons of Brasil.The guitarist, Danny Embrey, brings wonderful style and understanding of this music to the band through much study of brazilian jazz form. Greg Whitfield on electric bass is proclaimed a scholar of contemporary Brazilian music – whether it is Samba, MPB, Bossa Nova, or Partido Alto, Greg knows it all. Doug Auwarter accompanies the group on the drums and is said to be “the Brazilian heartbeat of the band”. Their percussionist, Gary Helm, is known for his “instinct and intuition for finding the perfect sound” which has made him legendary in this music scene. Roger Wilder on keyboards  has played with such jazz notables as Stanley Turrentine, Randy Brecker, Adam Nussbaum and Chris Potter.“These guys live and breathe Latin Jazz” said Ginsburg. “If you like Bossa Nova don’t miss this one.”

THE COMPOSER’S SHOWCASE will be hosted on Saturday, August 9 at 8:00 PM in Starr Theater at Walton Arts Center. This event features Northwest Arkansas’s finest jazz musicians performing original compositions in a variety of ensembles. These compositions are often world premiere performances of some of the most promising rising stars in jazz as well as seasoned performers. Artist performing will include Claudia Burson,  Rick Salonen, Ben Harris, Matt Smith, Adams Collins, Darren Novotny, Walter Savage and more!
